7 June 2018, Oxford, UK
Speaking at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford, 7th June 2018 workshop themed ‘Practical Challenges of Sustainable Electrification in Africa’. My talk entitled “The role of PPPs in turning the lights on in Africa“, other speakers include a number of other experts from the field of renewable energy solutions in Africa.
The aim of the workshop is to present and discuss challenges, learning lessons and best practices of renewable energy projects in Africa on macro- (policy frameworks, electrification strategies) and micro-level (specific project experiences, social-, financial, economic-, environmental implications). The guiding principle of the discussion is the UN SDG No 7: access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The main focus of the interdisciplinary discussion will be on off-grid solar PV projects in Africa but we will also touch on-grid projects to avoid an isolated consideration of the topic. A central goal of this interactive workshop is to include a strategic discussion related to the questions of how to achieving the SDGs such as:
- What are the general success factors for RE projects in Africa? (on-grid vs. off-grid)?
- What are project-related issues that urgently need to be discussed/solved in order to achieve sustainable project implementation & scaling-up energy access that are not yet in the focus of the discussion?
- What are the current positive/negative trends within African electrification strategies?
- What needs to be done in order to decrease African dependency from foreign project development and to enhance local market development?
